In Study, Reading a Novel while Driving Trucks Lifts Crash Risk by Large Margin


For truck drivers videotaped for 18 months during a study, reading classic novels like War and Peace, Ulysses, or Jane Eyre was found to be a risky distraction. The truck drivers say they will not give up their tradition of delving into a good classic novel while on the road. “There ain’t no way I am putting down my friggin Grapes of Wrath! Like how the hell am I supposed to stay awake?!” When compared to other behaviors like texting, reading classic novels while driving a truck was found to be 20% more of a distraction, especially if the author is Russian or Irish.
